Vandoren ZZ Tenor Sax Reeds - Singles
Vandoren ZZ Tenor Sax Reeds - Singles
Note: These are priced per reed. One of 'em. (Not a box. Though you're welcome to buy 5 of them, and I may just throw in the box for free)
Developed in 2002, the ZZ jazz reed is immediately responsive without sacrificing the brightness tone quality required for this style of music.
The unique relationship between the heart and tip provides extraordinary color, great response and a durable life. ZZ reeds combine the medium-thick heart, spine, and rounded tip of the V16 with the flexible palette design of the JAVA, giving the player a rich, colorful sound with quick response.
Feel free to buy single reeds—I don't charge a premium for breaking up a box, so you can just buy a few, or mix and match. Seriously no one else does this.
For those doing math, I price these reeds as one-fifth of a normal box of 5 reeds. But you don't need to buy a box to get this discount!

I use tenor sax reeds for my bass clarinet. I find they help minimize squeaking --because one cannot always squeak big.
Great reeds!
These reeds (V16 and Jazz) sound great on my sweet new Tosca bass clarinet that I also bought from Mike. I play on a jazz mouthpiece (Vandoren B46) and the reeds are suited to my instrument and my playing. Best thing for me is they minimize squeaking. So I can play with more confidence across the instrument's range, even high notes. Don't let the fact that they are tenor sax reeds discourage you from trying them. They are the same size as bass clarinet reeds. I find these hold up better than V12 bass clarinet reeds during long orchestra rehearsals (don't have to swap out reeds).
I've used the ZZ reeds for my alto and liked them, so thought I would try for tenor. This is with a Yamaha 5C mouthpiece, which has a narrow tip opening. I tried three strengths, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5. They didn't work Goldilocks style. The 3.5 were too resistant, although were improved by some adjustments. The 2.5 were immediately too soft. And the 3.0 started out great (the ZZ is a very responsive reed), but in a short time became too soft. I mean they got too soft within about 20 minutes of play. However, with a different mouthpiece your results could differ. I think I just need a different reed for my setup. That's the world of cane reeds for you.
