Royal Global Classical Limited Bb Clarinet

Royal Global Classical Limited Bb Clarinet

The Classical Limited is Royal's entry-professional model — naturally-aged Grenadilla, polycylindrical bore, and features you'd expect at higher price points: left-hand Ab/Eb key, two barrels (64mm and 65mm), silver-plated keys. It's our best-selling Royal, and it's not hard to see why. (For the full Yuan Gao founder's story, see the MAX product page.)

How it plays

The scale is where we should start: it's one of the most accurate I've fingerprinted (at any price). The sound is medium-dark, and the note-to-note color is about as even as anything I carry — almost nothing strays.

Two things to know about, and the dashboard below maps both: the usual loud-playing pitch drop in the low chalumeau affects this horn a bit more than most, and one twelfth runs wide...but that's about it. Articulation is crisp throughout.

Resistance: 6/10, Medium

Still pretty middle-of-the-road resistance-wise; it feels similar to the Polaris. Hear how it responds to volume in the audio player below — Weber first (wide dynamics, wide color), then the Berlioz (wide dynamics, narrow color), then the Gershwin (narrow on both).

Before you decide

At this price, three horns are worth considering along with the Classical Limited.

The Uebel Advantage is the classic cross-shop — much brighter, more free-blowing, and its twelfths spread more than the Classical Limited's. Both makers season their wood naturally, no kilns, and I see less cracking from both than from some other makers' instruments — so the wood question is a wash; it comes down to sound and feel. The MAX is basically this same instrument in composite: it articulates a touch quicker and is nearly crack-proof, but the Classical Limited runs darker (no surprise: it's wood). The Yamaha 650II also articulates quicker, but it's brighter and its scale wanders more.

Play or listen to all of these in the audio player and pull the dashboards up side by side. Buy the Classical Limited if you want the darkest sound and the most accurate scale in the range; if quick articulation is the thing you care about most, listen closely to the MAX and the 650II.

FAQ

Short answer: All earspasm instruments come with a 7-day trial. Please read my trial policy before pulling out that credit card.

Medium answer: You have 7 days from the date of receipt to try the clarinet. If you don't like it, that's fine (my feelings aren't hurt!) — just let me know and I will send you a return label. Box it all up and send it back. We keep 5% to cover credit card transaction fees and a (hopefully!) brief round trip back to Miles or John — my technicians — to do a reset on the horn.

Long answer: Read my trial policy :)

Yes, it comes with the standard Royal Global warranty. If you ever have any problem with the instrument, I'm your quarterback. I'll take care of the whole process, just let me know you need help, and I'll take it from there.

Inspect the package before you sign off at delivery! If there are any issues resulting from shipping, we have taken out an insurance policy to cover damage (and loss). But we need you to document this damage or we can't do anything to help. Please read my trial policy for how to handle this issue, should it arise.

Not if you live in the Continental US! Because I want you to find the right instrument for you, and doing so online is harder than doing so in-person, I will cover the return shipping. Please read my trial policy for trial and return rules.
