Backun Lumiére Barrel (Bb/A Clarinet) - Cocobolo/Grenadilla

The Lumiére. This barrel is one of the newer of the bunch, and levels-up ANY Backun clarinet (or, for that matter, non-Backun clarinet). It's also gorgeous.

But if you're reading this, you're probably wondering, "is this barrel $50 better than the Fatboy?" Good question. The difference is in the wood, and the finishing process. This will lighten up a dark clarinet sound — not brighten, but will offer a bit less resistance and density. This is ideal for music like Francaix, Copland, Weber—even some parts of Beethoven and Mendelssohn.

Cocobolo vs. Grenadilla? That's up to you; they both feel about the same to me, so it's pretty much an aesthetic thing. Note: These barrels fit only Backun, Buffet, Royal, and Uebel clarinets—but not Selmer. Contact me if you'd like to try one for your Selmer.

I recorded all of these barrels on a brand new Buffet R13 — because that's what most people are familiar with.

All barrels were recorded in one sitting, with the same reed (CARBEC 3.0), and same mouthpiece (Vandoren BD6HD - fairly open). You can select "HALL" or "DRY" to hear the barrels with and without reverb. Hope this is helpful!

Amazing barrel

The barrel provides such a nice “Woody” tone to the clarinet! Paired with the Lumiere bell, its a perfect match!

What a beautiful sound!

What a beautiful sound! And one that is IN TUNE (shocker, right?) I had been really struggling this winter, no matter what barrel(s) I used my instruments were hopelessly flat (I was starting to look for 63mm barrels; seemed like crazy-short might be the only answer). Thank goodness another member of one of my ensembles recently got a Backun Fatboy, bringing this brand to my radar. Ordered several (yay for Earspasm's "buy it, try it, return the no's for refund" policy), and found that the Lumiére works better for me. Using these barrels, my tone is immediately less flat to start out and only gets better from there (and quickly, too). I kept two of the three I ordered, and am using the 64mm for my A; the 65mm for my Bb. The idea of being able to use a 65mm and not be hideously, unfixably flat is just... mindblowing. Insanely great. (And bonus: I'm finally not getting hairy eyeball looks from the other members of my various ensembles -YES!)
How can a barrel make such a difference? I have no idea, but ohhhh I am so glad I tried these! They have made a Big difference for me. (I also love the esthetics: plain black Grenadilla, quietly fits right in with my Buffet Crampon instruments.)
