Kind of like a mini Fatboy barrel, Backun has made an Eb barrel that opens up the sometimes-constricting feel of an Eb clarinet — substantially. I'm the first to admit I'm not an Eb player, for lots of reasons, but I can definitely "play one on TV" when I use this barrel.
Ok, so what's a "cutback" barrel? Have a look at the reverse side of the barrel — there is a cutout on the back. Why? So you can use a Bb clarinet reed! Why is that a big deal? Because, for one, you don't have to buy Eb clarinet reeds, since Bb reeds work just fine on Eb mouthpieces. (Actually, there's no other reason, since reason #1 is good enough.)

The barrel, besides being beautiful to look at, like all Backun products, it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. My only complaint is not the fault of Backun, but it is tight on my Eb, which is a Patricola from Italy, and it may be not exactly compatible with French style Ebs. It works but I may have to have it slightly modified so that it fits better.
