Buffet Prestige Low C Bass Clarinet

Buffet Prestige Low C Bass Clarinet

Buffet told us to tell you this: Through the end of 2024, get a $150 rebate from Buffet toward any Buffet clarinet purchase!

Yeah, we think $150 is kind of silly too, given how expensive these instruments are. So, I'm going to make it less silly: Earspasm is offering an additional rebate on any new Buffet bass clarinet through the end of 2024. Because of Buffet's advertising rules, I can't tell you how much right here, so you gotta email me. Needless to say, it is a heck of a lot more meaningful.

Also, a quick note of pride: We have more Buffet Prestige bass clarinets in stock than anyone in the country — even the big guys (we usually have 5-6 in stock at any time), so you can choose from more than just the one that might be locally available. Just sayin'.

Ok, back to our regularly-scheduled program.

The Buffet Prestige Bass Clarinet (A.K.A. The 1193) used to be the only professional bass clarinet Buffet manufactured until the Tosca came out in 2014. The instrument has an upgraded key mechanism and slightly different tone hole positioning and sizing which gives the instrument a richer, more covered, warmer sound. It's the Buffet that you'd dress up and take to a bougie restaurant on a date—it's that refined.

I select these horns from batches in Jacksonville when they come off the boat, and bring them back to New York. Once acclimated to the Brooklyn accent, I have the pad heights raised slightly for a freer-blowing (and less-stuffy) sound, which you can hear in the videos below. Notice that it is still perfectly in tune, but just more open sounding. I also slightly adjust the key tensions to provide a less taxing action, more like a Bb clarinet. (To me, this is critical if you're going to attempt play Daphnis — or Giant Steps — without planning a visit to the tendinitis doctor.)

The total cost of the "earspasm setup" (for want of a better term) and tweaking of this instrument is included in the price—even though I pay out of pocket for it. Yes, it reduces my profit. Yes, people have told me I should charge a premium for doing it.

But I don't like the idea charging more for something that should come standard. So I won't.

All earspasm instruments come with a 7-day trial. Please read my trial policy before pulling out that credit card.

The instrument comes with

  • Standard Buffet case with hideaway backpack straps
  • Stock Buffet Mouthpiece
  • Neck strap, shoulder strap (for case), cork grease, warranty card, etc.

If you also would like the matching rose-gold Buffet Icon neck, contact me for a 10% discount code. The neck must be purchased and shipped with the instrument to receive this discount. (And yes, you can return the neck if you don't like it!)

Rebate FAQ:

Q: Ok, I'll bite. How does the rebate program work?
A: Simple: Contact me for a personalized rebate code prior to purchase.

Q: What if I forget to contact you prior to purchase?
A: Contact me after purchase and I will issue the rebate manually.

Q: Are the rebates separate? Like is the Buffet rebate one thing, and the Earspasm rebate another thing?
A: Yes. I will provide you all the necessary information to submit to Buffet for their rebate program.

Q: I'm still confused.
A: No worries. Just send me an email!

FAQ:

Q: What if I'm in New York and want to try it in person?
A: Contact me to set up an appointment, and let's do it!

Q: I see some of these instruments are "open box." What does that mean?
A: Sometimes I get instruments that have been at a trade show, or have a cosmetic issue on the case (seriously. the case), and I get a discount on these instruments. I pass that discount along to you. They get the same treatment as all of the instruments I sell, namely a full setup by my tech. You literally cannot tell the difference between this and a new instrument. Naturally, they also come with a full warranty (see below). If you have any questions about "what's wrong with XYZ instrument that it's cheaper" simply contact me, and I'll send you all that info.

Q: Does the instrument come with a warranty?
A: Yes, it comes with the standard Buffet warranty against cracks, etc. If you ever have any problem with the instrument, I'm your quarterback. I'll take care of the whole process, just let me know you need help, and I'll take it from there.

Q: What happens if it's damaged during shipping?
A: Inspect the package before you sign off at delivery! If there are any issues resulting from shipping, we have taken out an insurance policy to cover damage (and loss). But we need you to document this damage or we can't do anything to help.

Q: If I decide to return it, do also I have to pay return shipping costs?
A: Yes. And you will also want to insure it!

Q: Do you ship internationally?
A: Yes. You can add your shipping address when checking out to see what the shipping costs will be before taking the plunge. Note that VAT and Customs Duties are not included in this cost.

Perfect High School or Orchestra Bass Clarinet

The Buffet Crampon 1193 Bass Clarinet is the ultimate choice for serious high school musicians and a staple of orchestral repertoire. Rich, resonant tone, combined with excellent workmanship, makes this bass clarinet among the best in its class. One of the first things you will notice with the 1193 is its exceptional build quality. The grenadilla wood body produces a warm, full-bodied sound that blends beautifully in ensembles while still allowing for individual expression. The silver-plated keywork feels smooth and responsive, enabling precision even in fast, intricate passages. The intonation is very even throughout the wide range of the instrument, from the low C to the altissimo register. That makes it an ideal tool for challenging high school solos, orchestral works, or any repertoire that requires a great dynamic and tonal palette. The inclusion of a low C extension is a real game-changer for modern repertoire and bass clarinet parts in orchestras. The instrument, however, is an investment, and well worth every penny to students who are serious about their craft. The 1193 will stand up well to high school use yet still function at a high enough level to satisfy a pre-professional orchestral environment. In general, this bass clarinet by Buffet Crampon really does have value for its price. If properly cared for, this could be a bass clarinet that will easily carry a musician through their school and well into a professional career. Strongly recommended!

God, if only I had this and a tutor I wouldn't have had to do career Air Force. Can you play most of this without the register key?
