Backun Lumière Bb/A Clarinet Bell (Cocobolo/Grenadilla)
Backun Lumière Bb/A Clarinet Bell (Cocobolo/Grenadilla)
One of the newer designs Morrie Backun has developed, The Lumiere Bells have a double voicing groove (as compared with the MoBa and the OG Backun bells, which have a single groove).
The double groove...is it twice as awesome? Well, that's for you to decide. But it purports to further stabilize tuning and response in the clarion register. Cool thing: these bells are interchangeable between Bb and A clarinets. Other cool thing: they have a carbon fiber tenon which stabilizes the tenon better than metal (and better than wood) against cracking. Note: These bells fit only Backun, Buffet, Royal, and Uebel clarinets—but not Selmer.
Cocobolo vs. Grenadilla? That's up to you; they both feel about the same to me, so it's pretty much an aesthetic thing.
These bells are available on trial for one week. Here is how my bell/barrel trial works:
Purchase the barrel(s) or bell(s) you would like to try. I will run your card for everything you select.
- When the item(s) arrive, keep the packaging (and the included return label).
- You have 7 days to try the items.
- Anything you would like to keep...keep!
- Anything you would like to return, package them up in the same tube and box they came in, slap the return label on the box and drop them in the mail.
- Send me an email to let me know they're coming, so I can be on the lookout for them.
- I will quickly evaluate everything for scratches or any other damage (you've been careful...right?), and refund your credit card. Note we do hold back 3% because credit card transaction fees are not refunded to us. Yay banks!

I ordered both the Lumiere barrel and bell, with the hope they'd give my R13 a bit of a boost in sound quality and intonation. I was not disappointed.
The barrel seems to add a bit of focus to the tone, and the bell ... well, I was shocked. Backun claims it helps smooth out the transition into the clarion range and, sure enough, it does! It also completely corrects the tuning of the low E and F, which tend to be flat on most clarinets ... again, I was shocked. Some of the newer clarinets actually have extra keys / vents on the lower joint to help alleviate this problem - with the Lumiere bell, they are just FIXED - no extra vent needed!
Very pleased with these purchases and the quick service from Michael - the bell originally was a bit tight on my R13 (though it fit my Selmer 10G just fine). Michael helped to track down a top-notch technician near me and I was able to get the lower tenon "shoulder" (the part farthest from the bell) shaved a couple millimeters so that it now fits both horns perfectly.
Great products and great service.
